Speaking at CMBC Family Conference

May 16th, 2008 | Category: The Expeditionary Man

I will be one of the speakers at the CBMC Family Conference at Schroon Lake, NY from Aug 28-31. During my sessions, I’ll be focusing on the core themes from my book The Expeditionary Man. This year will be the first time my family and I have attended, but I’ve heard rave reviews about the conference and the beautiful Adirondack locale from others. For more info and registration details, visit the CBMC Family Conference web site.

Creating a “Culture of Discipleship” in Your Home

May 12th, 2008 | Category: The Expeditionary Man

culturemaker.jpgIf I were to throw out the question “How are you discipling your kids?” to a men’s group at my church, the typical answers in response would be something like We hold a weekly Bible study, I lead a family prayer time, or I take my kids out weekly to talk. Men are problem solvers after all. So we tend to look at discipling as a set of tasks that we can work into our calendar. Family devotions, one-on-one talks, and prayer times are great activities, but they will usually prove ineffective if they stand on their own. The pitfall of an activity-based approach to family discipleship is that a man ends up segregating “discipleship” from “normal life.” To kids, discipleship becomes That Thing That Dad Leads at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesdays, just before they get to watch Lost.

“The Expeditionary Man”, Now Available

May 12th, 2008 | Category: The Expeditionary Man

Nearly four years since I first came up with the idea, my newest book The Expeditionary Man is finally available on Amazon.com and other stores. Of all of the books I have written, The Expeditionary Man is the one nearest and dearest to my heart, and the one I am most passionate in talking about. I just got my copy a little over a week ago from Zondervan and was excited to hold “my baby” for the first time.

Here’s a video overview:

Stay tuned. Much more info on The Expeditionary Man will be posted here over the coming weeks.

Hello America! Announcing The Expeditionary Man Bike Tour

January 30th, 2008 | Category: The Expeditionary Man

expman_biketour_official_300.pngCalifornia, here we come…along with Arizona, Colorado, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and South Carolina!

Now that plans are official, I wanted to officially announce a unique author tour that my family and I are going to be taking this summer.

The Expeditionary Man Bike Tour is a cross-country bicycle trek that will start on June 28, 2008 in San Diego, CA and finish up 2,500 miles later in Charleston, SC on July 25, 2008. Along the way, I will be speaking at churches and community events about the key message of my upcoming book—The Expeditionary Man: The Adventure a Man Wants, the Leader His Family Needs (Zondervan, available in stores in June 2008).

My 15-year-old son Jared and I will be biking each mile of the coast-to-coast tour. My other two sons—Jordan (17 years) and Justus (13 years)—will be riding part of the days and serving as part of the support team. My wife, Kim, will be driving the support vehicle. (Bless her heart—that’s 2,500 miles at 15mph behind us! )

In addition to speaking at various events across the country, my vision is that the tour helps symbolize the promise of family unity in a hurried world as well as the hands-on leadership role that every father is called to.

The official web site for the bike tour (whythebike.com) will be up and running in March. However, in the meantime, you can visit the tour’s Facebook Page for more info.

Finally, if you live near where we will be traveling through and would be interested in hosting a church event, I’d love to hear from you. Please contact me at rich_at_digitalwalk.net (substitute @ for _at_).
